MN: National Republican group funding dominates functions of independent expenditure org

Almost all of the organization's money funneled to attacking Dayton

Earlier today, TAI reported that independent expenditure organization Minnesota’s Future was late in filing their mandatory campaign finance disclosures. Those forms (PDF) are now available, via the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board. And the numbers show that, thus far, the prime function of Minnesota’s Future has been to channel money from the Republican Governors Association (RGA) in order to attack Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Dayton.

Minnesota’s Future has total contributions of $429,500, with $428,000 of that coming from the RGA. Of the $409,000 the group has made in expenditures, $408,000 have been directed at ads attacking Dayton, both on television and online.

The bulk of the group’s expenditures have been spent purchasing television air time to run an attack ad against Dayton. By funneling the money through the independent expenditure group, the RGA can hide the funding source of the ad.
