Texas Democrats to hold injunction hearing Monday over King Street Patriots
Saying that the King Street Patriots (KSP) did not respond to a request to see its corporate records, the Texas Democratic Party is holding an injunction hearing Monday with a district judge in Austin, according to a TDP announcement.
On Wednesday, TDP General Counsel Chad Dunn sent KSP and KSP/True the Vote a letter demanding to inspect its books and records, citing Business Organizations Code 22.353(b), saying failure to comply would be a criminal offense.
The letter stated TDP would be available to inspect the records Thursday, Oct. 21, or Monday, Oct. 25. TDP’s request was reported on in a recent Texas Independent story on KSP and KSP/TTV’s national ambitions.
Here is the text of the TDP announcement (emphases theirs):
(Austin, TX) – Texas Democratic Party General Counsel Chad Dunn announced today that the TDP is holding an injunction hearing with District Court Judge Dietz, scheduled for Monday, October 25, at 2:30pm at the Travis County Courthouse in Austin.
On Tuesday, Dunn mailed the King Street Patriots a demand under Business Organizations Code 22.353(b) to inspect its books and records, noting that failure to comply is a criminal offense. When King Street failed to respond, the TDP sought to pursue court intervention to ensure these public disclosures are made as required by law.
“The King Street Republicans are failing to comply with the law that requires them to disclose basic information about their organization. They are hiding records that show who is funding their efforts and what correspondence they’ve had with Republican political groups,” said Dunn. “We look forward to requesting the judge allow us to move forward with our effort to make sure all those who acted in concert with the King Street Republicans group, including Republican candidates, oppressive “poll watchers,” and all their donors are held responsible for their actions.”
