Congressman Todd Akin on Thanksgiving: Pilgrims fled ‘socialism’

U.S. Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) went on the House floor Tuesday to give a Thanksgiving speech. But he insisted, “They [the Pilgrims] came here after trying socialism, it didn’t work.” Only socialism had not even been invented in 1620.
Following the lead of Glenn Beck — that bastion of revisionist history, irrational thought, and delusional interpretation of innocuous events — the tea party politicians and pundits are treating history as a societal Rorschach Test, seeing “enemies of the state” at every turn.
Joseph McCarthy would be proud.
Footnote — watch for the Texas State Board of Education to mandate “pilgrims and socialism” to be a central theme of the U.S. History curriculum in their public school system.
