Michigan House bill would privatize school services
Schools will be blocked from directly hiring people to provide food service, and custodial or transportation services under a bill scheduled for consideration by the House Education Committee today.
It’s unclear how the measure would affect school finances.
According to a bill analysis by the non-partisan House Fiscal Agency many districts have already moved to outsource services when savings are to be found.
“Some districts have found that maintaining district employees to perform these noninstructional services is less expensive than privatizing,” HFA wrote, “thus, the bill could increase costs under certain circumstances by mandating the privatization of certain non-instructional services.”
Teachers are rallying against the bill which they say will force schools to fire thousands of works and hand their jobs over to out-of-state and foreign firms.
“They don’t see the value of these jobs to our students, our schools, and our communities,“ The Michigan Education Association said in a statement. “They don’t understand the local economic impact of outsourcing these important middle class jobs. They don’t recognize the safety and quality concerns involved when handing this important work over to for-profit corporations that put their bottom line ahead of the needs of students.”
The school I work for is talking about privatizing bus drivers, janitors and office workers…And I under stand the need to save money do to the high cost of health care..thank you jack azz liberals! ( But I have yet to hear them say anything about getting RID of the Boss that is over bus drivers, janitors and office workers…Lets face it, He won’t be needed anymore…For that matter its time to cut principals as well…As for teachers, well it seems to me that all the teachers at the school I work for, do way to many art projects and the kids have Art class so it’s past time teachers are told NO MORE CRAFT PROJECTS…We have class rooms that I’m sure the teachers are Hoarders! One class room has three desks per students…I think the desks should be cut to 1 per student or like in most of the school big round desk should be brought in…The kids have really neat chairs with bags on the backs to put all their stuff…(little pockets to hold stuff, like pencils, note books, etc….If the company that takes over hires me, I’ll be one of the lucky ones, 1 they pay more than I make but we of course lose benefits…like sick days…that’s going to hurt…my health care is through my husband so I don’t have to worry about that..Also my pension, which I’ll freeze and make them pay me when I’m old enough…that will piss them off…and that’s why I’ll do it! If they don’t hire me, well I’ll milk unemployment out as long as I can!
