When confronted with his own very recent words, senior adviser Larry Kudlow had nothing coherent, or even accurate, to say.
Trump's trade war is threatening to ruin President Obama's economy. And Fox News host Chris Wallace called out Trump's chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow for taking the potential "calamity" lightly.
On "Fox News Sunday," Wallace confronted former TV pundit Kudlow with his own recent words about the trade war. On CNBC in March, Kudlow called Trump's steel tariffs a potential "calamity for our economy."
After playing the clip, Wallace noted, "Mr. Kudlow, that's where we are now. The NAFTA talks have broken down, the steel tariffs are on. To quote Larry Kudlow from just a couple months ago, a 'major calamity' for our economy and our markets."
Kudlow's blasé response was to say, "Well, I hope it works out."
"What do you mean, you — that's pretty cavalier!" noted a stunned Wallace.
Kudlow insisted the NAFTA talks haven't broken down, which is false, and said that "we hope to continue" negotiations.
In fact, Kudlow made those remarks about Trump's tariffs just two weeks before Trump hired him to join the administration.
And during that same March 1 segment, Kudlow also called Trump's national security justification for tariffs "baloney."
Mere weeks later, it is Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who is mocking Trump's pretext for tariffs, while Kudlow is now praising them.
"Canada is a secure supplier of aluminum and steel to the U.S. defense industry, putting aluminum in American planes and steel in American tanks," Trudeau said during a press conference this week. "That Canada could be considered a national security threat to the United States is inconceivable."
Furthermore, studies have found that Trump's proposed tariffs could kill as many as half a million jobs a year. And pulling out of NAFTA could cost nearly two million jobs in the first year alone.
Americans need more than Larry Kudlow's "hope" that "it works out." They need a government that isn't actively trying to hurt them.
