Devin Nunes: Questioning Kavanaugh signals 'collapse of the republic'

As the FBI investigates Kavanaugh, Devin Nunes is saying it’s ‘dangerous’ for senators to even look at evidence against the nominee.

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) took time away from undermining the Russia investigation to run interference for Brett Kavanaugh by saying that Democrats questioning Kavanaugh’s conduct in high school constitutes a threat to the republic.

On Fox News’ “Justice with Judge Jeanine” this weekend, host Jeanine Pirro played some tape of Trump mocking Senator Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) performance at Kavanaugh’s hearing, and asked Nunes for his “take.”

“What you are seeing is the collapse of institutions in this country,” Nunes said.

He added that when “you have senators talking about high school yearbooks, you are watching the collapse of the Senate, a collapse of the republic. It’s a really, really dangerous place we are in.”

Nunes also praised the conspiracy theories that Kavanaugh laid out during his belligerent and unhinged opening statement. In fact, he called Kavanaugh’s rant “amazing.”

The yearbook that Nunes derides actually contains multiple entries that refute Kavanaugh’s testimony and demonstrate that he lied under oath about the extent of his high school drinking, among other things.

The yearbook also contains multiple references to sexual activity, including to “Devil’s Triangle,” a slang term for an encounter between two men and one woman. Kavanaugh offered non-credible explanations for those references, and testified under oath that he was a virgin for “many years” after high school.

But despite the fact that the yearbook contains important evidence, Nunes claimed that examining them is a threat to our very republic — and then praised Kavanaugh for advancing conspiracy theories for which there is absolutely no evidence.

That’s par for the course for Devin Nunes, who has constructed a similar alternate universe around the Russia investigation. He insists that Americans ignore the mounting evidence of Trump collusion with Russia, while promoting evidence-free theories that include the claim that Trump is part of a “deep state” conspiracy against himself.

Whether it’s threatening national security to help Trump or shielding an accused sexual predator like Kavanaugh from accountability, Devin Nunes never lets the facts get in the way.
