Donald Trump could not even escape his failure as president in front of a friendly red state crowd at Monday night’s college football playoff game, where he was met with boos from the crowd. That failure was compounded by hypocrisy when Trump bungled the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Despite his crusade against NFL players protesting racism by kneeling during the national anthem, Trump clearly stumbled his way through the anthem he claims to love:
The performance naturally exposed the insincerity and hypocrisy behind Trump’s racist campaign against black NFL players who protest racism by taking a knee during the anthem, whom Trump has even tried to get fired.
On Tuesday morning’s “Fox & Friends,” the gang was joined by Fox News contributor and disgraced former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to complain that pointing out Trump’s awkward performance was somehow unfair.
Seconds after playing actual video of Trump blowing the anthem, co-host Steve Doocy claimed Trump “showed how you do it,” and complained about “internet trolls” criticizing Trump for forgetting the words to the anthem.
Gingrich’s response was to lash out at Trump’s critics, but not to refute the criticism in any way:
GINGRICH: I think if Donald Trump came out on the field, sang the national anthem solo, and did so perfectly, people on the left would claim this was a sign he is not really doing his job because he is studying music, and how can he be spending all this time studying music when he ought to be president. This is just junk.
Gingrich is right about one thing, which is that Trump’s racist appropriation of the national anthem protests is worthy of criticism under any circumstances. If you are going to make a literal federal case out of singing the national anthem, then knowing the words to it is the absolute lowest of expectations.
Trump’s inability to meet the lowest expectations is no surprise by now, but worthy of criticism every single time.
