Mitch McConnell apparently thinks a Trump ethics probe would be 'presidential harassment.'
In an interview with the Associated Press, Senate Majority Leader and Trump ally Mitch McConnell (R-KY) equated Democratic efforts to exercise oversight over Trump in the White House to "harassment."
In the interview McConnell described efforts to hold Trump accountable, should Democrats regain the House, as the "business of presidential harassment."
Thus far, Republicans have refused to do their constitutional duty and probe Trump's finances, despite his violation of traditional ethical practices.
Trump's hotel in Washington, D.C., for example, has become a corruption hub. Influencers, including foreign entities, hoping to gain something politically have funnelled money into the hotel as they do business with Trump in the Oval Office.
The hotel has also become a dumping ground for Republican donor money, taking in funds from campaigns, committees, and even Trump's own re-election campaign.
Republicans have also refused to use their power to investigate Trump's tax returns, even though he is the first presidential candidate in 40 years who has refused to release them to the public.
Recent reporting from the New York Times revealed a pattern in the Trump family of tax evasion and fraud. Tax experts have estimated that Trump may owe the state of New York more than $400 million in unpaid taxes, penalties and other related fees.
McConnell's comments suggest Congressional Republicans will continue to abandon their constitutional duty, choosing instead to protect Trump.
Along with Speaker Paul Ryan, McConnell is in the way of finding out what exactly Trump has done, and what he is currently doing, to enrich himself using a public office.
