Donald Trump shocked the world when he suddenly decided to fire FBI Director James Comey, tasked with investigating the Trump campaign’s possible coordination with Russia during the 2016 presidential election.
In the aftermath of that decision, a senior Russian official appeared to mock the firing.
During a photo op with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dismissed reporters’ shouted questions with a wave, as Tillerson walked away, completely ignoring them:
REPORTER: Does the Comey cast a shadow of your talks, gentlemen?
LAVROV: Was he fired? You are kidding! You are kidding!
The Russians must indeed be amused by Trump’s outrageous and despotic decision, which not only mirrors the oppressive behavior of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, but has plunged the United States even deeper into the exact sort of political chaos that their interference was designed to produce.
When we speak of resistance, it is as much about Putin and his government as it is about Trump. The only possible way to set this right is with a special prosecutor, an action that Trump’s unbelievable decision may just help spur.
