San Juan mayor gets the last word with Trump: Stop "spouting off" and do your job

Throughout the entire sordid affair of Donald Trump attempting, unsuccessfully, to look as though he is helping the people of storm-ravaged Puerto Rico, he has found a repeated punching bag in San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz.

Despite the fact that Cruz has been wading waist-deep in raw sewage rescuing her citizens, Trump called her “nasty,” accused her of “poor leadership” in response to her desperate pleas for federal help, and suggested that she and her entire populace were just too lazy to help themselves.

In a further snub, Trump refused to acknowledge Cruz on camera at a meeting on Puerto Rico recovery efforts.

There is only so much abuse a person can take. In comments to the press following a briefing, Cruz had this message for Trump:

I think his staff understands now and they have all the data they need. But I would hope that the President of the United States stops spouting out comments that really hurt the people of Puerto Rico because rather than commander-in-chief, he sort of becomes miscommunicator-in-chief.

Trump would do well to heed this advice, for his entire presidency has been spent in a haze of gibberish and fiction.

Just last week, Trump bizarrely claimed that health care repeal did not pass because of a nonexistent hospitalized senator, and during the same Puerto Rico trip he mixed up the Coast Guard and the Air Force.

Some of the things coming from Trump’s motormouth are harmlessly pathetic, but others, like his mocking of nuclear-armed dictator Kim Jong-un as “Rocket Man” are more dangerous.

Try as he might, Trump cannot pass off his own failures onto Cruz or anyone else. There is no mistaking a true, distinguished, and courageous public servant from a fraud — and Trump’s constant horrendous behavior makes it easy to see who is who.
