"They have to give us more help": Trump complains Puerto Ricans aren't doing enough for him

Donald Trump complained that Puerto Ricans who are still trying to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Maria are not doing enough to make him look good in response to the storm. Speaking on the White House lawn, Trump responded to questions about the situation on the island, asserting that the administration’s response has been “just as good” as it was in dealing with the storms in Texas and Florida.

He then insisted, “On a local level, they have to give us more help.”

The comments are the latest salvo in Trump’s attacks on the U.S. territory, even as the infrastructure there was subject to cataclysmic devastation. His administration continues to mangle the response to the storm while endlessly praising himself for a job well done.

TRUMP: And in Texas and in Florida, we get an A+. And I’ll tell you what, I think we’ve done just as good in Puerto Rico, and it’s actually a much tougher situation. But now the roads are cleared, communications is starting to come back. We need their truck drivers to start driving trucks.

On a local level, they have to give us more help. But I will tell you, the first responders, the military, FEMA — they have done an incredible job in Puerto Rico. And whether it’s her or anybody else, they’re all starting to say it. I appreciate very much the governor and his comments. He has said we have done an incredible job, and that’s the truth.

FEMA authorized full disaster help for Texas within 10 days of Hurricane Harvey, yet under Trump — two weeks after the storm hit Puerto Rico — that authorization still hasn’t happened.

Instead, Trump dedicated a golf trophy to hurricane victims and continued to attack Puerto Ricans, whining, “They want everything to be done for them.”

The poor response exposes Trump’s incompetence, and his instinct — as always — is to lash out at the vulnerable while tooting his own horn.
