Even as special counsel Robert Mueller closes in on Donald Trump and his associates, the investigations in Congress continue — and although Republicans have tried to quash them, the probes are still doing some important work.

Late Friday, the Washington Post reported that investigators on the House Intelligence Committee will bring Trump bodyguard Keith Schiller in for questioning about the details of the Trump/Russia dossier compiled by former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele:

The House Intelligence Committee has called former longtime bodyguard Keith Schiller to appear for an interview Tuesday as part of its probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Investigators plan to press Schiller about allegations in the 35-page dossier that Russian officials obtained compromising information about Trump’s personal behavior when he visited Moscow for the 2013 Miss Universe pageant, according to people familiar with the investigation.

A retired NYPD detective, Schiller has been working security detail for the Trump Organization for years, and his team is known for using excessive force against protestors.

And as Schiller accompanied Trump on the 2013 trip Moscow, his testimony could shed light on the matters at issue in the dossier.

More recently, Trump had Schiller deliver the note terminating former FBI Director James Comey. House investigators also want to hear his account of this incident, as it could be relevant to allegations that the dismissal constituted obstruction of justice.

Schiller is an important actor who has been close to Trump for a long time. Getting his words on the record regarding Trump’s Moscow trip, his actions toward Comey, and other pertinent issues could prove critically important to the ongoing investigations.

And Trump could hardly use his go-to claim of ignorance of a man who has been literally at his side for years.
