Trump has 9-course feast with dictator who starves his own people

Trump's lunch with Kim Jong Un was an insult to the U.S. and the people of North Korea suffering under a brutal dictator.

Trump's meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un in Singapore was chock full of horrid symbolism, right down to the "working lunch" that the two fast friends shared with their respective delegations.

The White House released a menu for the nine-course meal, which featured luxurious fare like "beef short rib confit, served with potato dauphinois and steam broccolini, red wine sauce on the side" and three desserts, and which took place at the swanky Capella Singapore hotel.

After their first set of meetings, Trump and Kim posed for pictures as they prepared to sit down to a nine-course lunch with their staffs, and Trump joked that the photographers should make them "look nice and handsome, and thin."

When NBC News reporter Hallie Jackson later pointed out Kim starves his own people, Trump responded by praising the dictator anyway.

"Kim Jong Un, as you know, has killed family members, has starved his own people, is responsible for the death of Otto Warmbier. Why are you so comfortable calling him 'very talented'?" Jackson asked.

"Well, he is very talented," Trump replied. "Anybody that takes over a situation like he did, at 26 years of age, and is able to run it, and run it tough — I don’t say he was nice or I don’t say anything about it — he ran it."

Trump's "shadow chief of staff" Sean Hannity once bitterly complained when President Barack Obama put Dijon mustard on a hamburger, so it will be interesting to see what he has to say about this.

Kim Jong Un is notorious for starving his own people. Yet while an estimated 18 million North Koreans go hungry, Trump not only decides to sit down to an enormous and luxurious feast with the dictator, he cracks wise about looking "thin."

Trump has already spent months giving Kim the legitimacy he craves, and continued to do so by praising Kim throughout the summit, while attacking our allies.

But symbolically speaking, his extravagant lunch with Kim may have been the crowning insult to the people of North Korea, who suffer under the man Trump has now elevated.
