In an interview Saturday evening, Donald Trump defended his decision to throw paper towels at a crowd of hurricane victims in Puerto Rico earlier this week, saying they were “very good towels.”

Speaking to former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee on his eponymous show on the Trinity Broadcasting Network, Trump said the hurricane victims — many of whom had lost their homes, businesses, and belongings in the storm — were “having fun” and “loving everything” when he decided to throw paper towels at them.

He then complained that the media hadn’t covered the incident fairly and bragged about the cheers he got from the crowd.

“They had these beautiful, soft towels. Very good towels,” Trump said. “And I came in and there was a crowd of a lot of people. And they were screaming and they were loving everything. I was having fun, they were having fun. They said, ‘Throw ’em to me! Throw ’em to me Mr. President!'”

“So the next day they said, ‘Oh, it was so disrespectful to the people,'” Trump whined. “It was just a made-up thing. And also when I walked in, the cheering was incredible.”

Trump visited Puerto Rico for just four hours on Tuesday, during which — in addition to lobbing supplies into the crowd — he downplayed the severity of the disaster by comparing the death toll to “real catastrophes” like Hurricane Katrina and complained that hurricane relief efforts had thrown the budget “out of whack.”

In his interview with Huckabee, Trump defended his administration’s woefully inadequate response to the hurricane, calling the widespread criticism “fake news” and continuing his attacks on San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz.

According to the latest reports, 90 percent of Puerto Ricans are still without power more than two weeks after Hurricane Maria hit the island.

But at least a few of them have “beautiful, soft … very good” paper towels. SaveSave SaveSave
