"Your party is rooting for a pedophile." Shareblue exec nails Mitch McConnell

Following the latest allegations of sexual harassment against Minnesota Sen. Al Franken, over 20 Democratic Senators — led by Kirsten Gillibrand, Mazie Hirono, Kamala Harris, Patty Murray, Maggie Hassan, and Claire McCaskill — have called on him to step aside.

But notably, their chorus was joined by one man who had decidedly no business pointing fingers: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

While it is impossible to see Franken having a future in the Senate at this point, McConnell — who has recently insisted he would welcome accused pedophile Roy Moore into the Senate if he wins his race in Alabama after all — has a lot of nerve trying to claim any sort of moral high ground.

Shareblue Media Executive Editor Jess McIntosh excoriated McConnell for his pearl-clutching and moral cowardice in an interview with Ari Melber:

McINTOSH: Mitch McConnell had the gall to call on Al Franken to resign. Your party is rooting for a pedophile. I think they’ve lost the moral high ground of any fight that they could possibly want to wage at this point. And they seem to be unaware that that’s going to cost them with either their own base, or the moderates that they tend to rely on, especially in off-years. I don’t understand what this strategy could possibly be for them, but I feel like it’s going to turn off voters that were already pretty squishy about the fact that the president is an admitted sexual predator. Now they have to deal with a pedophile on top of that.

McConnell has shown absolutely no interest ridding the government of Republican sex abusers. His initial opposition to Moore quickly vanished as he and his party renewed their enthusiasm, and financial support, for the alleged child molester and predator.

Meanwhile, neither McConnell nor any other Republican seems bothered that they knowingly elected to the Oval Office a man over a dozen women have accused of sexual assault and harassment.

Democrats, by contrast, have diligently pushed out men from their ranks who have abused women. Polls show 81 percent of Democratic voters adamantly refuse to vote against anyone accused of sexual misconduct, whereas just 41 percent of Republicans say the same.

In Alabama, 71 percent of Republicans will not accept the overwhelming testimony and written evidence that he pursued teenage girls. And 63 percent of Republicans nationwide believe Trump should stay in office even if he is guilty of sexual assault.

McConnell ought to get his own house in order before he takes a victory lap. Whatever happens now, the stain of Trump and Roy Moore are not going to wash off of the Republican Party.
