Andy Birkey, Senior Reporter
Andy Birkey spent five years writing for The Minnesota Independent, a former affiliate of The American Independent News Network. His writing on LGBT rights, conservative religious movements and Minnesota politics earned him several awards including a First Place by the Society of Professional Journalists for Best Series about a conservative Minnesota ministry. Prior to joining AINN, he was a project coordinator for several different HIV prevention programs. An avid soccer fan, he lives in Minneapolis where he is the head of the Minnesota Jacks, an internationally ranked gay soccer team.
Eli Clifton, Reporter
Eli Clifton reports on foreign policy for The American Independent. Eli holds a bachelor's degree from Bates College and a master's degree in international political economy from the London School of Economics. He previously reported on national security and foreign policy for ThinkProgress and Inter Press Service. Eli is coauthor of the Center for American Progress' report "Fear Inc.: The Roots Of the Islamophobia Network In America." His work has appeared on PBS/Frontline's Tehran bureau, The South China Morning Post, Right Web, Asia Times,, and
Todd Heywood, Senior Reporter
Todd is a senior reporter for The American Independent. He was also capitol correspondent for Between the Lines newspaper, Michigan’s LGBT news outlet, for 15 years. His reporting has been published in such publications as POZ Magazine, The Journal of Process Theology, City Pulse and more. He has also worked in television. His investigative work related to HIV policy landed him on the POZ Magazine “Top 100” activists, ideas and people fighting the HIV crisis in the world in 2011." Heywood is currently working on his first book, “Viral Apartheid: HIV criminalization and the Epidemic.” The book explores the legal, historic, scientific and cultural constructs that drive HIV stigma in American culture. When not working, Heywood enjoys spending times in the woods taking photographs. He lives in Lansing with his three beloved dogs -- Virgil, Gypsy and Gobbo.
Sofia Resnick, Reporter
Sofia Resnick reports on reproductive rights, LGBT issues, and money in politics for The American Independent's D.C. bureau. Before coming to TAI, she worked as a freelance reporter in Chicago. She has also worked for The Austin Chronicle in Austin, Texas, and the teen-girl feminist Web magazine PaperDolls.
